THURSDAY, December 17

Zechariah 4:1-14. Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the LORD of hosts.

The temple lay in ruins, from a foreign invasion several decades before, followed by exile of the Jews. But now the exile was over. The people had returned and were setting out to restore the Lord's house to its former glory. Zechariah prophesied at the beginning of this project. It was the late sixth century B.C.

Struggles for control often afflict ecclesiastical building projects. Everyone "knows" what a holy space should look like, but seems to have a different opinion on the details of design and appearance. Many are unwilling to let go of their opinions. The result can be a painful division, with the losers walking out in a huff, perhaps never to return. The new church gets built, but there's blood all over the floor.

Perhaps Zechariah foresaw something like this twenty-seven centuries ago. So he reminded the would-be architects and contractors and decorators that they were not in charge. If the job was to be done right, it would be done not according to their taste in architecture and decor, but by the spirit of the Lord, a spirit manifest more in how people relate to one another than by what ecclesiastical buildings look like.

A Good Reminder

Written by Brad,

This is a good reminder to me of all the times I try to take control of something only to realize that I'm most productive when I give it up to God instead.

Jesus said to be greatest, you must be least. I am constantly being reminded of that. Only in serving will greatness be shown.

Written by Andrea,

Reminds me of our search process for a new priest. My church and the one in the next town over are yoked (we share expenses for a priest's shared services) and the search committee had four members from each church. There was a lot of jockeying for power and influence in the early days of the committee. Fortunately, we kept praying and the Holy Spirit was with us. Only when we finally gave the task of calling a priest to God, to whom it really belonged all the time, were we able to move forward and find the person who was called to our congregations.

Written by Richard H. Schmidt, Editor, Forward Day by Day,

A lot of search committees are that way, even if they don't involve people from two congregations. Same with vestries, finance committees, music committees, bulding committees. I think there are two reasons for it. First, a lot of people don't have much say about other aspects of their lives, so they assert themselves on church comittees. Second, people only argue about things that really matter to them, and this shows the church matters to them a lot.

Written by Tim,

The scripture says we can do nothing with out him. He tells us to let him have our burdens, and yet we try to do it on our own or we try to help him. Iam guilty of this and I know that he is all powerful. God is so good. I pray that Ill be ready when comes to take his family away.

Written by Steve Doutt,

Unfortunately, those who don't read the message are not inspired by it. Many young adults revolt against Jesus. Is it because they don't have the spirit? Or, is there a legitimate basis for their rebellion. I've always had a faith in God, that has never been an issue. My faith in mankind has always waivered; and, I've always wondered about this man named Jesus, and, "...is he the Christ?"
