THURSDAY, December 30 (Frances Joseph Gaudet)

John 7:53—8:11. Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.

“What is original sin?” the twelve-year-old asked her grandfather. And he replied, “It is something we all have in common. It is one of the things that holds us together.”

Grandfather’s definition of original sin was a way of saying what Jesus had in mind when he said, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” There is no doubt about the sinfulness of what the woman had done. Jesus understood the destructive consequences of adultery just as much  as the scribes and Pharisees. The difference was that when Jesus zeroed in on sin, it was not just the obvious sins that caught his attention. Less obvious, but just as sinful, was the self-righteous finger-pointing of those who sought to condemn the woman. Hard-heartedness  is also a sin, because in its rush to condemn it does not hear the message of mercy and forgiveness from the Savior.

Jesus’ parting words to the woman—“Neither do I condemn you”—are a reminder of just how forgiving is the God whom we meet in the Bible. (1996)

To me, this is one of the most basic lessons of Jesus' teachings, and it's a good reminder of how much God loves us.

How touching and inspiring to read about the work of Frances Joseph-Gaudet with today's meditation. Her dedication to prison reform for juvenile offenders holds up for us a shining example of how we may the teachings of Christ into the world -- where they are so needed.
The fine line

Written by Mo Po,

What is the fine line between being non-judgmental and being permissive of sin? That is something I often stru*gle with. We are supposed to be forgiving of sinners, but by not being judgmental of someone committing sin, we become enablers of the sinner. Over the years, I have called people out on a lie or an act and they retort, "you go to church, I thought you weren't supposed to judge me." Anyone have any advice?

I realize that I am supposed to be forgiving, but by not criticizing sinful behavior, I am becoming an enabler of the behavior. It seems so simple but it is so difficult not to be judgmental. Lord give me the the grace to be able to love everyone and not judge people in this imperfect world. Look at me, a sinner.
