Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 71. O God, you have taught me since I was young, and to this day I tell of your wonderful works. And now that I am old and gray-headed, O God, do not forsake me, till I make known your strength to this generation and your power to all who are to come.
In Canterbury Cathedral I felt part of the prayers of pilgrims through the centuries. It is a place where saints of the past are remembered, including the murdered Archbishop Thomas à Becket. During the last service of the Lambeth Conference, humble Melanesian Brothers were remembered. They were martyred in recent times as they sought to bring peace to the Solomon Islands.
The psalmist sings of God’s faithfulness. God has a purpose for us from the time of our youth to old age. The psalmist celebrates the faithfulness of God, which goes on beyond the span of our earthly lives “to all who are to come.” We are part of a great river of faithful people which receives, celebrates, and proclaims God’s faithfulness.
I would like to see a window in a cathedral that expresses in color and light the wonder of being part of that great river which flows from the past, embraces us, and will flow on in our children and children’s children.
