THURSDAY, January 21 (Agnes)

Hebrews 6:13-20. We who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

This is a land of refugees. Every day, more arrive from the camps, inside and outside the country. These refugees have hope, the sure and steadfast anchor of the soul that leads them home, leads them to believe that life will get better, that the wars will end and they can simply live in peace.

Their hope was taken away during those wars. While peace treaties do give them some hope, those treaties do not provide the anchor they need to continue living in this harsh land. Instead, they find their hope in the risen Lord, the one who suffered with them, who died with them, and who has been raised to new life ... with them.

Christianity has blossomed wildly here because life is so hard. The refuge that Christ offers--the love, the hope, the idea that life can be different and is different – not only gives them something to hold onto; it makes them want to go forward in new and powerful ways. God's gift of hope shows them how to live these new lives.

Christians here have seized God's hope, and it is marvelous to behold.

Once again, we have EXACTLY the message from God that we need during these hard times in Haiti. Thanks be to God that we have hope, for that is what gets us through.

Today's commentary and the Genesis reading.

Written by Dan,

Today's commentary made me think about the Genesis reading which has always been one of the most confusing and interesting to me. But, the commentary which said, "Christianity has blossomed wildly here because life is so hard...." is a very true statement. Whenever life is really easy, like for most of us in the U.S. then we get proud and confident and have no need for God and his salvation. I'm thinking this is what God was doing for them in this chapter of Genesis; He was saving them from that mindset that they didn't need Him.

Dan,

Yes, I think God was saving us from self-destruction by confusing us, giving us time, and different paths to follow to him. I think yesterday's reading from Hebrews (6:1) about "going on" and "leaving behind the basic teaching about Christ" and not "laying again the foundation" convicts me, because I have been enlightened and keep relying on being able to start over with God. I think the aggregate effect of me and my fellow Babble-on-ians is that we have one foot on yesterday, one foot on tomorrow and we're wasting away today, always on the believed assurance that we are going to be forgiven if we repent. In the mean-time we consume God's abundance that, if shared, would raise all of our sisters and brothers up now.
