Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

THURSDAY, January 27 (John Chrysostom)

Mark 6:30-46. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people.

At a dinner for teachers, two of us clergyman sat together with our teacher-wives, wondering which of us would be called on for the invocation or to “give thanks” or “say grace” at the bidding of the master of ceremonies. To our surprise he called on a staff member of the county education department.

This gentleman confidently prayed for the particular needs of teachers, thanking God for all his blessings and for our fellowship and food. It was a beautiful thing. Several people looked at us to see if we were miffed at being passed over for a layman. No way.

Would that every Christian would go and do likewise! This man reflected a background of family prayer, church attendance, and the guidance of a capable pastor. I was once asked to attend a city council meeting for the purpose of opening it with a prayer. I suggested  to the mayor that the council members open their meeting by praying with and for one another. The job of the clergy is sometimes to do, but more often to help others to do. Start learning today. (1973)

Written by Tim Holsonback,

I've known places where members of a church who've attended it for eons did not know how to take up offering. Paying attention to the whole worship experience should be emphasized too!
