THURSDAY, July 2

Acts 8:26-40. Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?

The eunuch did not understand all he was reading,  but he longed for the living water and found it in the most unexpected spot--in a desert.

A young family I know does not go to church,  except to baptize their babies. They are not bad people. These days, they are typical. Demographers note a trend toward lower church attendance by those who were regularly brought to church as children but now see no importance in it with their own families.

One of the children in this family intuitively sees me as someone who knows God. She often tells me of some notion she has of God. She has experienced God in all the places and times of her six-year-old life.

"Sometimes when I am brushing my teeth--while my fingers are still wet with water--I make the sign of the cross on my forehead, because I was baptized," she recently told me, adding that the gesture makes her feel comfortable and safe.

How can the unchurched know about God unless we tell them? And once they know, how powerfully might they witness back to us?

Your new website looks good, but access to the archives of your meditations does not function as well as it used to. Can it be fixed?
Familiar story

Written by Jeremy,

I had an experience like this child when I was young. I used to do the same thing with water when brushing my teeth. I did not attend Church, but the portrait of Jesus in my room was a comfort on dark nights and sad days. I now attend church each Sunday, and God's comfort and love is a great gift.

Written by Glenna Bernard,

I really enjoyed the story of the little child with the brushing of the teeth, it made me conscious of the importance of the cross, I have started using the sign of the cross on my forehead, I place my finger in water and make the sign of the cross on my forehead whenever I am about to leave the house. Love this story
Sort of Sad

Written by Amy Newsom,

that part about the child, just kinda made me sad that it sounds like the people are more or less thinking of themselves and kind of depriving the child of much of a relationship with God, the clid obviously has interest in knowing more about God or is yearning for connection with God.
We need to "show" at least as much as "tell"

Written by Andrea,

This was a beautiful story of how God is always present, if only we have eyes to see. One thing I would add is that the meditation asks, "How can the unchurched know about God unless we tell them?" One answer is that we are called to live as disciples of Christ, showing God to others by our lives and by our love. Sometimes I think we worry to much about the telling and not enough about the showing. As people in AA say, "You my be the only Big Book [AA manual] someone will ever read." We could easily substitute "Bible" there.

What an Opportunity!

Written by laura ellen truelove,

What an opportunity the writer of this meditation has to talk with this curious child about Jesus! Perhaps, with the parents' consent, she might read Bible stories to the child and talk to her about God's love. Isn't this exactly how Phillip responded to the enuch? And how nice if the writer would invite this unchurched child to go to church! And who knows? Perhaps the child might in some way kindle an interest in her parents to return!
