THURSDAY, July 9

Luke 24:36-53. And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

In southeast Texas, everyone is ready for winter by July. But all who have lived here for any length of time know that the "winter" is about five scattered days in January when temperatures dip into the thirties.

We know there are places with cold winter snow, but not here. My grandson's preschool class studied snow so thoroughly that he longed to see it. He often asked why it doesn't snow here. "It's too hot," I explained. "We'll have to take a trip to where it snows."

Before sunrise one morning in March of our first year in the country, as I opened the door for the pre-dawn dog walk, I saw wafer-sized snowflakes falling like ticker tape at a parade. Undisturbed snow covered the landscape like baptismal linens. "It's snowing!" I exclaimed. My husband appeared behind me, gazing in wonder.

By the time the sun appeared and people darted to work and school, all the snow had melted away. But in offices, stores, and restaurants all day, everyone happily talked about snow. My daughter got a picture of my grandson holding his baby sister in the falling flakes. With great joy, they saw the blessing.

Written by Rob Lebby,

Snow, as written about by today's author, is a great topic for a hot, July day. At the age of "more than 40-something", even now, I enjoy snow. Every time there's even a hint of snow, I regress back to my childhood in the earnest hope that there will be much snow, measured by the yardstick rather than the ruler, as we saw in East Tennessee in March, 1991.

With all of the trouble and uncertainty of life that exists in the world today, however, and when this life is over, I look forward to seeing Jesus, like the disciples in today's Gospel reading, with even greater anticipation than all of the snow in Vermont in an entire winter. What a joy it must have been for the disciples to see Jesus and to know that he was, as he had foretold, alive, risen from the dead. What a blessing for us all that will be!

Written by Mary M. Gieseler,

This story about snow reminded me of a time more than 50 years ago when I was teaching in Port Aransas, Texas, on an island near Corpus Christi. One morning it bagan snowing tentatively, and when I arrived at school my first-and-second graders were wild with delight. All except one had never seen snow. We quickly put on our coats and went out to the front yard for our science lesson, to "study" snow by making a snow lady using all the snow we could gather. I still have a snapshot of the children and our superintendent gathered around the snow lady. The snow was gone by lunchtime but the memory lingers on.smilies/smiley.gif
