Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Acts 1:1-11. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
A few years ago a series of television commercials showed an interviewer asking a person who had just completed a major feat, “What are you going to do next?” The champion answered, “I’m going to Disneyland!” The point was to highlight the celebrations of fun and frolic at the famous amusement park.
How would Jesus have answered if asked the same question so long ago? The Gospel of John tells us. Jesus said “I go to prepare a place for you.” Throughout the season of Easter we have been hearing stories of the resurrected Jesus and the new life he offers. Today we are told the story of Jesus’ ascension. After his death and resurrection, our Lord did not seek a place of ease or recreation. He ascended to heaven for re-creation. He has ascended to unite heaven and earth and to inaugurate the fullness of the kingdom of God.
As we walk through this Eastertide we are called to share in that kingdom and share in this new life. We are called to share in the very re-creation of heaven and earth. What are you going to do next? I’m going to live in the kingdom of God!
Pray for all incarcerated people and those who serve and work with them.
