Psalm 105. Remember the marvels he has done.
Today we read the beginning of Stephen’s great sermon that will culminate after half a week’s readings with his martyrdom. Nearly all of the sermon recounts God’s actions with his chosen people.
We read another account of those actions in today’s psalm. We also hear a summary of God’s saving deeds every time we celebrate the eucharist. “Remember,” our psalm tells us. Remember, recall, bring to mind, consider take thought…all of these are ways of trans-lating the Hebrew words rendered as remember in today’s psalm.
Why all this remembering? Why all this reminding ourselves of God’s great and mighty hand through- out history? Because in any given moment it may be difficult to see God at work. Recalling that God always proves faithful can give us the courage and fortitude to step forward in faith. Surely God’s chosen people were dubious of God’s power as they wandered the desert. Certainly Abraham and Moses took pause at God’s calls and promises. But history has taught that God is faithful and capable of accomplishing every word that he speaks.
Remember this.
