THURSDAY, June 3 (The Martyrs of Uganda)

Psalm 8. What is man that you should be mindful of him? the son of man that you should seek him out?

It is not just your neighbor who is created in the image of God. You, too, are made in his image and likeness. This means that you must not underestimate your own value and your own dignity. Some people do. They say, "Oh, I don't make much difference. What I do is of little consequence." That is not true. We are each to love ourselves and see our own worth by the clear commandment of Christ. We are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

We must have a true estimate of our own dignity. It is the surest defense against temptation. If we are tempted to do a cheap thing, we must say, "This is not the way the image of God should behave."

Each person is a coin made in God's mint and stamped with his likeness. We possess immortal souls and minds that can understand the workings of the stars. We are the sons and daughters of God. Let us not underestimate ourselves. Do not leave the winning of others to Christ to someone whose power you respect. You have influence and power of your own. Do what you can, and keep on. (1952)

Written by Sarah,

Reading this gem from 1952 reminds me of my grandmother, who read Forward Day by Day, and my mother, who reads it aloud to Dad daily still. I wasn't around in 1952, but Grandma was, and today I felt a connection to family, both temporal and eternal. Thank you.

Written by Jeannie Terepka,

Psrticularly as we come to terms with the terrible magnitude of the oil spill crisis, in terms of the current destruction, the rapacious greed of fossil fuel industries and the complacent self-indulgence of our American character, this half-century old meditation is helpful encouragement for all of us who sometimes feel that our own individual steps towards improvement can only be inadequate and feckless. -- Jeannie Terepka

Written by Barbara Summers ,

I turned two in 1952, but this message is so relevant to my life. I received so much emotional and verbal abuse during my youth that, although I have made strides, I still stru*gle with self-esteem problems. What healing words these are!
So lovely

Written by Sheri Christi,

What an inspiring message. I have found that God strenghens our capacity to represent him and to do good works when we are devoted to Him.
