Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 10:25-37. Just then a lawyer stood up.
Who among us is not a lawyer, at least in the biblical sense? Lawyers in the New Testament were not attorneys as we know them today. They parsed and interpreted the religious requirements the law of Moses placed on the Jews.
In that sense, who among us is not a lawyer? We all have deep within us expectations and requirements we set for ourselves and others who would seek after God. Holiness, righteousness, morality, and ethics are all part of the mix we seem to project onto ourselves and others. What do these mean? We can hardly answer faithfully and clearly. But Jesus does. What must we do to inherit eternal life? What laws do we have to keep? What rules must remain unbroken?
Love God entirely and love every one who crosses your path just as you love yourself. In the end it is not the rules that matter but the love.
This is what you should think if you wish to see God: “God is love.” What face has love? What form has it? What height? What feet? What hands? No one can say. Yet it has feet, for they lead to the church; it has hands, for they care for the poor; it has eyes, for through them the needy one is known. —Augustine
