THURSDAY, March 11

Mark 6:30-46. After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

In this chapter of Mark, Jesus learns about John the Baptist's terrible murder, finds a lonely place apart to collect himself, and then tackles the teaching and feeding of five thousand persons. Mark depicts an active, can-do Jesus, but we also see one who prays every chance he gets.

Prayer is unlike vitamins or exercise--it is impossible to overdose! Brother Lawrence prayed joyfully as he washed dishes. A rancher friend of mine prays as he spends hours alone in the saddle. Richard Foster, the Quaker writer and teacher, has joined a covenant of friends who take five minutes at noon to stop every other activity, assess how their morning has gone, and ask God's continual guidance.

Perhaps you can experiment with some new ways of praying. You might try a short prayer of thanksgiving for every person with whom you speak in a given day. Or you might offer a stoplight prayer: "You are patience and joy, O God. Help me be more like you."

Teresa of Avila said: "There is but one road that reaches God, and that is prayer. If anyone shows you another, you are being deceived." (1992)

The Problem of the Trinity

Mar 11, 2010 at 8:09 am

Written by Steve Doutt,

It always comes back to this for me. Jesus loved God. He prayed to God. Jesus didn't pray to himself and he didn't worship himself. This is a great mystery that we may never understand; how can Jesus also be God. I can only pray for understanding. I also pray for protection from those who are so sure that they understand more than I do.

Written by Marco of San Francisco,

I agree with what Steve said above. I don't understand the Trinity either, Father, Son
and Holy Spirit, three that equals One. I pray to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as
three separates, yet, one being of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I don't fully
understand the beautiful service of the Blessed Sacrament either, however, I receive
great strength and courage and a prayerful spirit every time I attend this service.
Trinity

Research about Arianism and find out about the development of the Trinity. I have been advised to not let it be a stumbling block, because many don't really understand it. I have been silent about this but heartened to read that others have concerns too
Plant analogy

Mar 11, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Written by Benson,

This analogy helped me to understand:

Imagine God as a Spider Plant, growing on a plain of the Holy Spirit.. God is the Plant itself, it's sap, which is drawn from the ground, is the Spirit of God.

And then one day the Spider Plant grows a 'shoot'.. one of the branches touches the 'plain' and another Spider Plant forms.. has it's own roots, draws it's own sap, but still is attached to the main plant via the one branch, and the sap they both share.

And so you have the main plant (God), it's offspring (Christ), and the sap that feeds them both (The Holy Spirit)
we all wonder

I don't understand how the Trinity "works" either, but that it most be true for God to be the God s/he is was made clear to me in that profound theological tome--The Shack.smilies/wink.gif
