THURSDAY, May 12

Luke 5:1-11. Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.

I’ve never understood the charms of fishing with a rod. The thought of spending an entire muggy afternoon  staring at the distant point where my fishing line disappears into the murk has always had limited appeal. All  I remember about the one fishing trip I took as a kid  was the mess I made trying to wind up the reel—knots and tangles everywhere—and the fear of impaling  myself on that nasty looking hook.

To use a net—now that would be a different story.  I once went seining on the beach of a barrier island.  With a friend on the other end, I took up one side of a long, narrow net that had been hooked to a set of  poles. We waded a few yards into the ocean with the net extended between us and then pulled it slowly through the water as we both waded back to the shore. I was amazed at how lush the catch was, teeming with sea creatures I never knew existed. Now I know how the apostles must have felt, their nets sunk deep in the water, their amazing catch a sign of God’s extraordinary bounty, of the power of Jesus’ promise that someday  they might pull all the world into God’s nets of love.

Fish for people

May 12, 2011 at 5:38 am

Written by Chris,

Fishing has been a part of my life from the time I could hold a fishing rod with one grandfather who just loved to fish, the times I worked with my other grandfather on the boats in the bay, and the times my wife and I took our four children fishing at the RIVA. Today, though I still love to fish, my fishing is more and more an outreach to others sharing God's love. I had an AHA moment from this message and scripture, fishing for people. Wow. Thank God for you for sharing this message. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Nets

Written by Juanito,

This is a beautifully written piece. It makes me realize that I was caught in the net maybe about a year ago. I'm a lifelong Episcopalean but not until then did everything really "click" for me.

The "aha" moment I had reading this has to do with the nets we use to catch fish (people). Sometimes I think we do ourselves a disservice by needing to use the terms Christ, Christian, Religious, Episcopal, Church etc. when we're sharing a message or fishing. If we're sharing love and peace without forcing scary words down people's throats - that can be a net that accomplishes the same thing.
