THURSDAY, November 12 (Charles Simeon)

Matthew 16:1-12. The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

It's November and I am preoccupied with my parish's Every Member Canvass and the impending annual Parochial Report. Show us a sign.

Times are tough. I head into the grocery store and am brought up short by the sight of the Salvation Army kettle and the tingling bell. It's starting early this year, I think to myself as I put change into the pot. "Merry Christmas," the volunteer says. Show us a sign.

Looking through vegetables I hear the unmistakable strains of the "Hallelujah Chorus," a mixture of the sacred and the mundane. Show us a sign.

Leaving the store a woman sees my collar and stops me. "I'm sorry to bother you. My daughter is very sick and I am scared to death for her. I am Jewish, but I wonder if you would say a prayer for her?" I ask, "Why don't I pray for you both?" I take her hands and say a Jewish prayer of healing and blessing. After we say "Amen," she places her hands on my face and says, "You are an angel." No, I say to her, just a sinner trying to do God's work. "Pray for me," I ask her.

The Lord shows us signs all the time. See them?

Wonderful reading

Written by John Culbertson,

What a great reading you have presented this morning! Even in the worse of times, if one could only be aware of the blessings, the mercy, and the grace that surrounds us; would one not be blissfully joyous? I would like to put fourth the notion that the trick to joy in the face of scary economic times, is exactly the spirit in the "story" that the author told above in the daily reading. It is reaching-out to other's with help and a prayer. It is forgetting about yourself, and offering someone else your time, talents and treasures. In tough times, the economy of love still presents the greatest fruits.

Written by John Ingrisano,

What a nice, gentle meditation this morning. I guess it is the ability to have our eyes opened to the joys and blessings that are always around us. God bless and may all have a joyful day.

Written by Ken Cawthorne,

Thank you for a powerful and moving message! Not only are heavenly signs abundant if you just look for them, MIRACLES are also all around us. Fifteen years ago my wife was diagnosed by an OB-GYN oncologist with 80% chance of bilateral ovarian cancer. Although his recommendation was immediate surgery, a qualified surgeon was not available for two weeks. During that time, my wife was lifted up in prayer by the congregation of our small church many times. The findings at surgery: two fluid-filled sacks. Yes, heavenly signs and miracles ARE all around us. We just have to open our hearts to them.

"The economy of love." I like that. May we be inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that our hearts and deeds reject any notion of a "downturn."

smilies/kiss.gif This morning woke up and I felt so alone in the world, and then I read this meditation and these comments. I don't feel so alone now, and will try to look for my own "signs" today!

I think the gesture of giving to the Salvation Army, while nice in spirit, the Salvation Army has fundementalistic leadership and a history of discrimination in their hiring practices of GLBT (Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender) people in their hiring policies and do not offer domestic partner benefits. One should consider giving to the Episcopal Relief fund, not the (in my opinion) discriminatry organization known as the Salvation Army.

Written by Robert Lebby,

This website, thankfully, is one of the few places left in the world that has not been politicized and overrun with divisiveness and "party lines". I would like to respectfully ask that, together, we keep it focused on the only thing that matters in the end - that we have complete forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ our Lord if we just accept the gift he so freely offers.

I agree with everyone that miracles abound, if you have eyes to see. The colors of fall, the birth of a baby, a baptism, a healed and restored marriage...I could go on and on.

On another note, I think God is showing us a sign of a different kind - in fact many of them. I hope we are able to see them too.
