THURSDAY, November 24 Thanksgiving Day

Luke 17:11-19. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan.

The nine lepers who did not return to thank Jesus for their healing are often dismissed as ingrates. Yet, they were only doing what Jesus had told them to do, which was to go and show themselves to the priests at the Jerusalem Temple. On their way, they were made clean, so they continued to the Temple, where Jews made thanksgiving offerings for extraordinary blessings. It is not necessary to think of them as ungrateful.

Why did the one leper turn back to Jesus? As a member of a loathed minority group, the Samaritans, he surely knew the priests at the Temple would not receive him if he sought to make a thanksgiving offer- ing there. He therefore turned back and expressed his thanks directly to Jesus where he knew they would be accepted.

I shall not here discuss whether the Jews should have scorned the Samaritans (Jesus, as is clear from this passage and others, did not), but all ten lepers in this story expressed their thanks in the way that was open to them. For some people, the options are limited. What avenues are open to you? How are you expressing your gratitude for God’s blessings?

Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart

Nov 24, 2011 at 6:08 am

Written by emeline,

How can I say thanks for the things God has done for me? In many and varied ways. By sharing my resources with others, by offering a kind word, a pleasant smile and performing a good deed. By avoiding the gossipmongers and re-directing the content of their coversation to something more Christ-like. By giving my thithes and offerings for the work of The Lord. By singing His praises from day to day. In all things and in all ways, I give Him Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

Written by nancy berndt,

I submit that this parable has been taken out of context. Reading on beyond the passage given, Jesus commented on the other nine who failed to return and thank Him...therefore He expected and desired it. With all due respect, we cannot claim that "we cannot think of the others as ungrateful". They had been blessed but failed in their response, and they failed the Bestower of their blessing. May we learn from this Scripture, and be thankful that Jesus makes available to us these life lessons.

Written by spiritual building blocks,

This is my thanksgiving message (exerpt from Wisdom Hunters)Which I sent by email to all my friends and family:

Gratitude explodes from our hearts when we are reminded of His generous gifts. They are incomparable and incomprehensible. Thanksgiving to God is a tremendous opportunity to unleash joy. This is one of the fruits of gratitude. Joy, joy, joy, joy down in our hearts, because He came down to earth and into our hearts. This is an occasion for a raucous but righteous celebration.

Gratitude to God can be a moment-by-moment expression. Even in the middle of the worst of circumstances, your thanksgiving to God is appropriate and needed. Look beyond your current condition to your heavenly hope. He has prepared a place for you, and His preparations are not lacking. They are just what you need and desire. So, your thanksgiving is for what He has done in the past, His current provision, and what He has prepared for you in the future. God’s generosity is without competition.

Thanks
