Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Matthew 6:25-33. Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
This Thanksgiving comes in dismal economic times. Lost jobs, depleted incomes and pensions, uncertain times--all take a toll on us.
Though the day is secular in nature, any gratitude for the bounty of the earth belongs to God alone. So much so that the church has incorporated Thanksgiving as a holy day. And as difficult or depressing as the times may be, we must pay attention to gratitude.
Our understanding of eucharist as "the Great Thanksgiving" puts into perspective our duty to be thankful people. "Think" and "thank" come from the same root. One cannot be thankful without thinking, recalling, remembering the things God has given to us and done for us. Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and said, "Take, eat...do this in remembrance of me."
On a day when we may not be grateful for what has become of the economy, we need to be aware of the far greater gifts God has given us. Today be thankful for what you have, what you have had, and what you hope to have. Remember, too, those less fortunate with acts of charity.
