Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Matthew 7:22-29. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; but it did not fall.
I was once fired from a job for which I really wasn't suited, something I considered "tragic" at the time. Ultimately, though, that loss allowed me to explore other jobs more suitable to my true self.
Defining myself through a job and a lifestyle resulted in a life built on sand. When that shaky foundation was swept away, I was freed to build my life on God. Often I have been so absorbed in my current life that I could envision no other life. So only when familiar ways are closed can I begin to see new ways. Many would call that mere hindsight, but I consider it a vision of redemption.
Building on God gives me stability I could not have known if I hadn't endured that "tragic" loss. Rain washed away the shaky foundation; now I have a life built on the rock of God. And that house does not fall.
