Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

THURSDAY, October 22

Psalm 37:1-18. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him. Do not fret yourself over the one who prospers, the one who succeeds in evil schemes...The lowly shall possess the land; they will delight in abundance of peace.

Ads for sleep medications often include sleep masks. Apparently, people anxious to find rest need every possible aid in closing out the rest of the world.

The peace promised by God, however, needs no such aid. As people of God, we will see and weep at the condition of the world, but then we will do our part to end the weeping. We will occasionally fret "over the one who prospers, the one who succeeds in evil schemes." But the success of evil--men or deeds--in the world is not evidence that God is not working.

The peace of God passes understanding and lives within our souls. That peace trumps anything this world might visit upon us. So it isn't necessary for those who are "still before the Lord" to close out the rest of the world.

We can live in the kingdom of humanity, our eyes wide open, because we are trained to see the kingdom of God.
