TUESDAY, April 26 Tuesday in Easter Week

John 20:11-18. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

Last night, my wife asked me if I’d noticed the man at the picnic table. We’d been to a big gathering at a public park, where an older gentleman was sitting alone, fiddling with a pair of dice. I remembered mouthing “Hi” and smiling at him, mostly out of social obligation, while I was busy visiting with people I knew.

She, however, noticing he was alone, had walked over to ask him how he was doing and if he wanted to eat (there was a cookout). He pretty much dismissed her and said he’d eat when the line went down, but the thing was, she took the time to ask. We both noticed his aloneness; she took action.

Not only did she ask, but she was prepared to listen to the answer. I know this because I know her and I know the depth of her compassion. Whenever my wife sees one of God’s creatures who appears marginalized, whether animal or human, she is affected. She will reach out when I think she ought to play it safe.

The significant thing is this: not only will she ask people how they’re doing, what’s wrong, or why they’re crying; she’ll really listen and try to respond to their answers.

Written by Barbara Summers,

Your wife is truly the embodiment of St. Francis of Assisi's prayer: "Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace."

Good news. I will accept this, and ask for help from God to create in me a right spirit when I greet others.

She not only asked, but listened, and had the good grace to take him at his word when he essentially indicated he wanted to be left alone.

Written by Garland Pollard,

The husband should not feel too badly. The point that your story reminds is how critical our "2X2" life is to evangelism, and how a wife is a partner. It reminded me of Mark 6, where Jesus sent his apostles out "two by two" because a team works better than one. The husband got the process started, and presumably would be there to help if the wife felt that there was something additional to be done for the man.
