John 20:11-18. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
Last night, my wife asked me if I’d noticed the man at the picnic table. We’d been to a big gathering at a public park, where an older gentleman was sitting alone, fiddling with a pair of dice. I remembered mouthing “Hi” and smiling at him, mostly out of social obligation, while I was busy visiting with people I knew.
She, however, noticing he was alone, had walked over to ask him how he was doing and if he wanted to eat (there was a cookout). He pretty much dismissed her and said he’d eat when the line went down, but the thing was, she took the time to ask. We both noticed his aloneness; she took action.
Not only did she ask, but she was prepared to listen to the answer. I know this because I know her and I know the depth of her compassion. Whenever my wife sees one of God’s creatures who appears marginalized, whether animal or human, she is affected. She will reach out when I think she ought to play it safe.
The significant thing is this: not only will she ask people how they’re doing, what’s wrong, or why they’re crying; she’ll really listen and try to respond to their answers.
