Matthew 5:11-16. You are the light of the world.

It was two weeks after Christmas, and my little grandson and I were taking down my Christmas tree. We had put the ornaments into their boxes, and I was removing the strings of lights. One string lay on the floor.

Thad picked it up and plugged one end into the other. He looked at it in a puzzled way, and asked, "Hot? Hot?"

No, Thad, the bulbs will not light up and get hot. The beautiful colored lights will not shine and sparkle unless the light string is plugged into the electric power outlet.

I spend a lot of time being plugged into myself. As long as I'm stewing and fretting, thinking that I need to control my little world and the people in it, as long as I try to do things on my own power, I'm like the string of colored lights, plugged into itself.

It's only when I turn things over to God's care that I can be a light in the world. (1993)

Written by Phil Bailey,

For me the difficulty is determining what I can't control and to turn that over to God while accepting the challenge of working on those things God wants me to effect. I can only be a light when I have discerned God's will and try to perform His will. The lesson of the Christmas lights is powerful.

Written by Stephanie Stover,

I, too, really like the example of the Christmas lights, and I find it very helpful. I am struck, also, by the image of all the lights shining together on a string. We do not work for God's kingdom on our own but as the Body of Christ ablaze with God's love. Thank you for this meditation!
