TUESDAY, April 6 Tuesday in Easter Week

Acts 2:36-41. Brothers, what should we do?

The sermon was finished, and three men who had listened to it went their way. One, meeting the preacher afterward, took occasion to commend the sermon and to express his agreement with its thought. And the preacher smiled, pleased to know that he had gratified those for whom he toiled, and that someone was in accord with what he preached.

The second man was so impressed by the sermon that he took pains to speak of it wherever he went, and recited its chief points to those who had not heard it. And the preacher was glad, for thus were his words given wings and his influence extended.

The third man went home and began diligently to put into practice the things that the preacher had said. And though he spoke no word of praise of the sermon, and though he told no one what he had heard, yet over him the preacher rejoiced, seeing in that man's endeavor the real fruit of his own work.

This same illustration could be applied to Bible reading. It is what God prompts us to do through the preacher or the pages of this book which indicates whether he has reached us or not. (1977)

Written by Susan Blair,

How one receives the word is a wondrous mystery. In my preaching career, I have noticed that some hear what I have preached and others hear somehing entirely different. I rejoice in both, because God has used me as the messenger and has transcended me in my humanness to perform miracles.

Written by Phil McGhee,

The preacher know that his sermon was good, notin the congratulations he receives from the members of the congregation, but in what they do after hearing the sermon. I think this thought comes from Saint Francis deSales.
