TUESDAY, August 11 (Clare of Assisi)

Mark 10:1-16. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.

The distribution of communion had ended and the clergy had returned to the altar to begin clearing the used vessels and reserved sacrament. The acolytes had swung open the large communion rail gates, and the congregation was singing the last verse of the post-communion hymn. Just then a small girl, maybe three or four, came running down the long center aisle, chased by a somewhat exasperated parent. "Wait!" the child cried, "I want Jesus!"

She climbed the steps and headed straight through the open gate into the sanctuary and plopped down at one of the prayer desks, extending her hands. The breathless mother arrived immediately thereafter with a chagrined look of "I'm-so-sorry-now-what-do-I-do?" The priest winked at the mother, smiled at the girl, and took a chalice and wafer down to her. The hymn being over, the whole congregation waited and watched as she received the body and blood of our Lord. As she returned to her pew with a look of holy satisfaction on her face, some began to applaud.

Truly I tell you....

I wonder...

Written by Rob Lebby,

What a wonderful story! Oh that I might have that same kind of child-like desire and faith in our God.

Just a thought, but I wonder why Mark put this reference to the children with Jesus immediately after Jesus talking about divorce? Was it just coincidence? Maybe...

Written by Andrea,

Yes, it's a wonderful story. Stories like this are part of why I think anyone who wants Jesus should be able to take communion - regardless of age or baptismal status. Knowledge of the creeds, church history, theology, and doctrine doesn't necessarily make us more worthy to receive our Lord.

Written by Brad,

IIRC, from the gospels, Jesus established communion not in a public forum, but as an intimate sharing with His disciples with the primary purpose being to remember Him. Baptism is the entry rite into the life of the church (hence why most architecture places the font at the entrance of the narthex). Why would anyone who is not a disciple care to participate in communion? It's not some magic spell promoting special blessing, but an expression of love and faithfulness for believers. Our Lord established a Kingdom, not a democracy.
Psalms Notation

Written by Patrick,

Please, forgive my ignorance, but what do the * and the numbers in brackets [] mean?

Ps 97, 99, [100] * 94, [95]

I've been scouring the internet. I think the * means same book as already noted. I saw a reference saying the brackets contain the greek numbering (the other numbers are the Hebrew numbers). Are these answers correct?

Thank you,

Peace,
Patrick

Written by Patrick,

I looked it up in the BCP. The ones in brackets are optional. The one before the * are for the morning daily office, and the one after the * are for the evening.

Thanks...

Peace,
Patrick
