TUESDAY, December 27 Saint John

1 John 1:1-9. We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life.

The apostle John wrote these words not long after the crucifixion. We can hear the note of panic, frustration, and disbelief in his letter. He was there, he saw it all unfold, the coming of the Messiah and the redemption of the world. How can anyone question? How can anyone doubt?

Yet, already in John’s time, the Gnostics were challenging the divinity of Christ, and other divisions and dissent threatened to dissolve the young church.

For many of us, this Tuesday is our first or second day back at work after Christmas. The commute, the keyboard, the tasks put aside before the holiday now look stale and burdensome. Perhaps for us, too, the sense of wonder we found in the Nativity is already starting to erode. But we can listen to John. He saw, he heard, he touched, he wrote. He wrote to bring joy to the hearts of his readers. May our joy, indeed, be complete. Christ is born. Alleluia!

Attribute correctly

Dec 27, 2011 at 7:03 am

Written by Craig,

John the apostle did not write the gospel of John. Biblical scholars date the gospel of John to late 1st century. While you thoughts on the essence of the passage are good inaccurate source attribution does nothing to strengthen the argument of the essential correctness of Christian thought and grounding.

Written by Bill,

Read the meditation again. It does not quote the Gospel of John, but the First Letter of John.
Christians will refute the darnedest things

Written by Captain,

I don't go to church for the reasons demonstrated above. One christian "zapping" another. Hypocrisy continues to lead hearts and heads.

If we just reduce the whole book to Luke 10:27, what else is there? No gottcha's... just love the Lord and love each other.

What seems to be so hard about that? I must be naive.

Written by Rick,

Even though Christmas Day is over, the reason for the day, the "event" that took place on that day; will live in our hearts all year long. Amen

Written by Mary kier,

Thank you for your inspiring meditation. Going back to work, to the ordinary from the extraordinary, reminds me that God is with us always. If we open our hearts he is there waiting to fill the void.
thanks

Written by Elizabeth Larson,

Regarding the meditation, Amen! Regarding Biblical scholars, ideas about who wrote what are based on 'logical' theory and reasonable argument, not proof. The pericope contained in John's gospel came from the apostle himself. Those who held his story in sacred trust were his followers and close associates. It is my understanding that many academics believe both to be correct. It is reasonable to think that the theology was more firmly grounded as the followers of Christ began to live in the light of the Holy Spirit and the world after the resurrection.

Written by Marti,

Having been laid off right before Christmas, I'm not commuting today. Tiresome and stressful as it was, what I wouldn't give to be including it in my day. It's true we don't know what we have till it's gone as Joni Mitchell sang. I am so grateful for today's meditation because it reminds me that God fills my world and keeps me grounded when I start feeling sorry for myself.

Written by Greg,

What have I heard, seen, and touched this Holiday Season that has brought me joy? What would happen if I shared this joy with others? The hardest thing about Christmas for me is letting it go when it is over. It's only after the fact that I realize how deeply I long for community, for slowing down and really paying attention to the wonderful people God has filled my world with. But just like the Church calendar, we move forward. If we were only physical beings, this would be a tragedy. But we are, as St. John says, children of God. Our future, no matter what our present struggles, is a never ending feast of glory, where we shall behold our Savior face to face. Then community will be a perfect union. We shall never cease rejoicing!

Written by Barry Chitwood,

I don't care who wrote the epistle. It and this meditation both speak to me. Do we believe that Christ is the Son of God or not? That is the pertinent question. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.
