Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. TUESDAY, December 7 (Ambrose)

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28. Pray without ceasing.

In Willa Cather’s novel Death Comes for the Archbishop, two things stand out about the archbishop’s prayer life. The first is that he always read his prayers before he got out of his sleeping bag. He had learned that his prayers were never prayed unless they came first, before the routine and business of the day. That is one good reason for having set times and places for private devotions. Without discipline, the practice breaks down and our separation from God grows greater.

The second thing about the archbishop’s prayer life is that he experienced great periods when he knew not the presence of God. But he continued to pray. During one such period he discovered the childlike faith of a  very simple old woman. It was her devotion that restored for him the refreshment of fellowship with God.

When our reservoirs run low and when God seems distant, God can speak to us through another person’s faith and thus restore our relationship. (1953)

I sometimes feel inclined to wonder why God hides himself so inscrutably from our experience. Or is it that the church has taught us for so long to look for him in the wrong places?

It is so true

Written by Chris,

There are moments that I feel distant from God mostly due to all the anxieties and worry the world brings, filling my mind. And during those times, because I have seen God in others, as in the devotion today, I now open my heart and look for God. And I am refreshed in my relationship with God, He was always there.

Written by Lois,

Yes, on Sunday our priest was saying part of the liturgy. It was like I had never heard it before. I looked up and across the church I saw one of our members close his eyes and rock back on his heels just a bit (our arrangement was in the round). I thought, "The holy spirit just hit John." I closed my eyes and.....

Written by Pat English,

I find God in the many kindnesses of the people whose paths I cross. I know God has plans for each of us. I have learned to turn my uncertainties over to God. We were not meant to face the challenges of life alone, as shared by a visiting minister months ago.
Thanks, Pat
