Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Mark 8:1-10. He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”
The night of the hurricane we were hosting a party to celebrate the seventieth birthday of a dear friend. A hurricane warning was broadcast. Sadly, the guests left early in order to secure their homes. Much of the feast lay uneaten. Early the next morning, Sunday morning, my wife and I drove to the cathedral to check the damage. Evidence of destruction by the wind was all around. Sheltered on the verandah of the cathedral were the homeless and some visitors to the city who had been stranded. We opened the cathedral doors and welcomed people to a space where it was dry and more comfortable. But how could we provide breakfast when no shops were open?
We returned home to retrieve leftovers from our feast the night before. In the nave of the cathedral we set a meal for the homeless and the stranded. We shared what we had. It was enough.
Jesus has compassion on the hungry crowd. He asks for and uses what his disciples have. He gives thanks for the little they have to offer. Miracles of love happen when we offer our “seven loaves” to him.
