John 7:52-8:11. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
What did you write, Lord, when that woman and her accusers stood before you? What words did your finger trace in the sand?
Did any of the crowd read it--or had they all gone? Did the woman--anxious, fearing for her life--read the message on the ground? Or was she too relieved, too grateful, too full of your forgiving grace to look down at your words?
The wind has blown away whatever you wrote that day. A million feet have obliterated your words. Yet your action haunts me.
There she stood--terrified, humiliated--wondering how it would feel when the first rock struck her, looking in the face of death and shame.
And you wrote on the ground.
Whatever words your fingers traced, I am sure it was a love note to all of us as we stand guilty before God's judgment. It was a pardon for our sins. It was a message of forgiveness and acceptance. (1984)
