TUESDAY, January 11

Mark 1:14-28. Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near.”

The gospel (good news) of God is that the kingdom of God is “near.” It is here for everyone who will receive it, but what does Jesus mean, precisely, by the kingdom  of God? It is easy to miss its divine depth and breadth  by taking only part of Jesus’ meaning and saying,  “This is it!” As Coleridge said, “Make any truth too definite and you make it too small.”

Essentially, the kingdom of God is the rule of God. Where God’s will, rather than ours, is done, there is  the kingdom. And the glory of the kingdom is that wherever it is found there we find health, wholeness of life, joy, and peace.

Why must we still pray, “Thy kingdom come?” Because, as Aldous Huxley puts it, too few of us have learned to pray, “My kingdom go.” Our self-will, our determination to have things our way rather than  God’s way, is the only reason why God’s kingdom is  not the only kingdom we see and experience on earth. But the good news is that the kingdom is near. It is in fact right here. If we want it. (1965)

Where the Kingdom is not

Jan 11, 2011 at 7:59 am

Written by Stephen,

I'm not sure where the Kingdom of God is, although I have surely experienced it in grace and mercy. I know where it is not. I don't see it in the fear and bigotry that too many subscribe to these days. I don't see it in the arming of ourselves. I don't see it in any political party or the proclamations that we are a "Christian Nation". By the way we act I think we are a country that sorely needs Christ in the acts and deeds of those who care for others and fewer super Christians dragging God around like the champion of their particular cultural values. God's name does not belong with "guts and guns".

I know when I'm pushing the Kingdom of God away.
The Good News is that the Kingdom of God is all around me.
Let go and Let God!

Written by Sam,

Amen to Stephen’s comment. My takeaway from today’s meditation is that I need to let go of my puny kingdoms, especially self-will represented by my ego, the conviction that I am right or certainly more right than everyone else ;-). In letting go, I can release myself of the disappointments that come with a frustrated ego.

I need to let God rule: His will be done in me today. That does not prevent disappointments but when I live into God’s will, they become his “orange traffic cones” that guide me to more fully understand the path He has laid out for me to tread. IF I want the Kingdom!
