TUESDAY, January 3

1 Kings 19:9-18. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

The snow this time of year reminds me of when I lived in Boston. The morning after a big snowstorm, I would wake up to the sound of silence. The rest of the year, I hardly noticed the endless sounds of brakes screech- ing, horns honking, and car alarms ringing. But on mornings when it had snowed, those sounds were muffled or altogether absent. Sometimes I wondered if it was the absence of noise that woke me up. I noticed the sheer silence.

At Horeb, the prophet Elijah was waiting for the Lord to pass by. He expected the Almighty to come in a big way, to make his presence known in power and strength. Yet God did not speak through the great wind, the earthquake, or the fire. It was in the sound of sheer silence that the voice of God was heard.

We live in a noisy world. If not the noise of city traffic, it’s the sounds of cell phones, televisions, and computers. Even if we are able to still these other sounds, we have the noise of our busy minds. I know that sometimes I need to simply sit—or take a walk—in sheer silence. It is often then that I know the presence of God.

Silence

Jan 03, 2012 at 12:51 am

Written by A,

In our cluttered world, in our demanding lives, in our crowded minds, how hard it can be to listen for the voice of God. Sometimes I find that I have "heard" when I am least aware, least focused, least searching. Silence can be a gift yet we are often conditioned to equate it with loneliness or lack of direction. Thanks be for the power of silence to speak most clearly of the presence of our Lord.
Be Still and Know God

Written by emeline,

God speaks to us in the stillness of the night or the morning. I find that doing my meditation very early in the mornings, gives me a chance to listen to God. With Him, I can offer my praise and thanks without interruptions from the busyness of life. Praise God for the gift of silence!

Written by Gail J in N.C.,

I am an extrovert.
I am a person who loves to talk.
So, talking to God comes easy for me.

Listening to God has taken years of practice, but now I LOVE to sit silently in his presence. My silence speaks volumes, and his presence speaks love.

Mary, I love that line from a Psalm. There is a guided meditation I use on my I touch. Yikes technology working for stillness and silence of the soul! It uses the same line and weaves a meditation with it I find it helpful iin my early morning time with God.
