TUESDAY, January 5

Ephesians 6:10-20. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

I serve as a missionary in Sudan, a nation that is still does not know peace. Whenever I return to the United States, someone asks me, "Are you armed over there? Do you carry a gun?" I smile ruefully, for the question saddens me, and reply that I put on the whole armor of God. How can I be a peacemaker if I am armed in any other way?

Some people do not like my answer. They see me as simplistic and naïve. Americans often seem inured to violence, judging by what is depicted in popular culture. For too many, it seems, violence is the only answer. But in a land torn apart by wars, where hatred of others is the norm and real violence takes place daily, it is more important than ever that I eschew guns and trust completely in God's holy armor.

One day, after explaining this to a group of American Christians, a new friend gave me a lapel pin depicting a soldier in ancient Roman attire, surrounded by Paul's words: Put on the whole armor of God. "Here," the friend said, "I think you need this more than I do."

Written by Richard H. Schmidt, Editor, Forward Day by Day,

To all readers: As you probably know, we have experienced a problem with a hacker posting unwanted messages on this site. We have added five security code letters at the bottom of this page, to be typed in. That will make it difficult for hackers to access the site. Unfortunately, I have found that it's also difficult for legitimate readers to post messages. I myself tried 15 times the other day to post a message here, but finally gave up. I apologize for this problem. We are working to fix it. Nothing is perfect, I guess, but we can still aim for perfection. God bless all of you.
Easy to relate

Written by BS,

Everytime I read scripture depicting a soldier its so easy to relate to after spending 20 years in the military and going to combat. I know the importance of your "armour" and weapons. They give you a very secure feeling. The same goes for knowing the love of God and knowing his word, and speaking the truth, when armed with these you can stand up to evil.

Written by Steve Doutt,

I mull over this dilemma a lot. After listening to God's response to my prayers I'm left with painful choices. Jesus did not defend himself. He did defend others, but not with weapons. He relied on others to defend him, but nobody did.

You are right, defending others is what we are called to do. But it's hard to remember that some days. Today's reading reminds us to depend more on God, less on our righteousness.

Written by Robert Lebby,

I appreciate the perspective from our writer today. I have owned guns in the past, but what I have found is that they were a cause for more anxiety than when I didn't own a gun. The only security I find is in the full armor of God. I don't eschew guns, but Jesus didn't say 'Blessed are the peacemakers for they will never run out of bullets.' smilies/smiley.gif
