Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 48. This God is our God for ever and ever; he shall be our guide for evermore.
The right guide can make or break a journey. Last summer I opened my birthday gift, a book about local parks, and my husband and I then went for a walk in a state park. Happening upon a park ranger and her group, we listened to her explanation of our surroundings. What were once thought to be gentle hills in those woods are now understood to be worn-down mounds built by some of the earliest inhabitants. Without the ranger’s eyes, I would not have correctly interpreted the topography.
The right guide is necessary for our spiritual path through dangerous forest. Because Jesus lived among us, he is the right guide: someone experienced, familiar with our world and able to lead us onto the right path, and knowledgeable about exiting the forest. I recently read an article full of platitudes meant to comfort those who are grieving. I didn’t sense that the author had lived among us who mourn, that he had ever stretched out his arms, begging his beloved not to leave, and then learned to live again.
Only an experienced guide will do, and Jesus has shared human experience to the fullest.
