Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Mark 6:30-46. He saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
Jesus, the good shepherd, felt compassion for the crowd and continued with his teaching. The greatest lesson of the day was the feeding of the five thousand. Taking the bread and fish on hand, he “looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves,” which fed the crowd, with food left over.
Haiti is a poor country recently knocked even further down by an earthquake. The Episcopal Church in Haiti has been a good shepherd. Before the quake, Episcopal News Monthly reports there were over 100,000 members in 169 congregations and only 37 clergy. Offering its resources to the glory of God, the diocese “served more than 80,000 children in 254 diocesan educational institutions, from preschool to college…sponsored Haiti’s only philharmonic orchestra and its only schools for disabled children and nursing.” Church vocational schools graduated auto mechanics, computer technicians, and business managers. Development programs helped farming communities.
The diocese has been damaged but its ministry continues. We must gather our bread and fish and offer them to Jesus our shepherd, so that we can feed his sheep.
