Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 62. For God alone my soul in silence waits.
I became a single parent when my youngest was two years old. I remarried when he was in college. The time between was filled with my children's activities. The television, the movies, the music, the books, the sports, the projects--all revolved around my children. While my husband recalls the pop culture of the 1980s, when he was in law school, I only remember that Miss Piggy loved Kermit.
Yet I vividly recall driving to church on Sunday mornings all those years. Cars were filled with people going to church. Whether it was families or couples, I would notice the two adults--expressionless faces looking forward without speaking. Because I longed for an adult conversation, I imagined all the things I would discuss with another rather than ride in silence. But now that I have been married for a long time, I know there is a comfortable silence, one that comes from knowing and loving a person so much that words don't have to be spoken continuously.
God feels that way about us. He relishes the time that we take to sit with him in comfortable silence, letting our soul connect with him.
