TUESDAY, June 1 (Justin)

Psalm 45. Your throne, O God, endures for ever and ever.

Psalm 45 celebrates the institution of Davidic kingship in Israel and at the same time the ultimate reign of God. The pageantry described in the psalm enables people to look beyond human power to God, whose throne is eternal.

We are reminded daily of the struggle between the superpowers and often hear their claims to ultimate truth. It is good to recall, even as we commit ourselves to the cause of peace and justice, that God reigns above all. We may get a glimpse of the epiphany of our Creator; our faith is strengthened each time that happens-- sometimes in the unlikeliest places.

The psalm provides a panorama of God's activity and human experience. Undergirding everything, the unshakable, eternal God remains faithful. Our God reigns, and so we do all in our power to bring about the peace of the world, to make it visible to all. In the process we learn to trust divine faithfulness even when fear threatens to overwhelm. (1989)

Creator God, rule in our hearts, reign over the nations and bring in the kingdom of Christ, the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Written by Greg,

As I plan for my trip to Israel in 2 weeks, I found this meditation to be of interest. Right now the State of Israel is dealing with blockade runners to the Gaza strip. Being political and being spiritual seems impossible to mix. I pray for Peace in all lands, all peoples, all families.

Written by Jean Erwin,

Is universal peace an unattainable goal? For thousands of years people have been at war; chaos reigned for years before and after Jesus' life on this earth, and yet people yearned for peace. I wonder if peace will come only when Christ returns.

Written by Andrea,

In response to Jean: It seems to me that one of the things the Holy Spirit is constantly doing is changing us, from our human nature toward being citizens of the kingdom of heaven, right here, right now. Maybe peace is impossible in the world until Christ returns, but that doesn't (IMHO) let us off the hook for proclaiming and living the kingdom now. Each person who truly lives a Christian life is one more emissary for peace in our time. "Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me."

Written by Sam Dowding,

I like Andrea's humble opinion, which is supported by Romans Ch 14, v19 "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification". When it comes to war and peace, I hope I can live as Paul advised: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." But "an eye for an eye" is so instinctive and worse, so satisfying, it seems real hard for us to make peace our priority.

Written by Sheri Christi,

First, best of luck to you, Greg, on your trip to Isreal. May God keep you safe. Second, people seem very happy to overlook the many challenging comments of Jesus, like Matt 10:34: I came not bring peace, but a sword. Further, in Luke 22, Jesus says, "But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." Hum... Jesus is so complex, so wonderful! I'm all for peace, but I understand that people and nations have to stand up for their selves.
