TUESDAY, June 22 (Alban)

Matthew 19:23-30. Peter said in reply, "Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?"

What Peter wanted to know is the question we still ask today. How shall we know that we have found God? What results may we expect to find due to our contact with God? Let us not fall into the dangerous mistake of supposing that it is primarily a matter of our emotions, of whether we "feel" God near, or not.

If we, by an act of imaginative faith, put out the trembling hands of our spirit to touch God, we may expect first of all a changed attitude to life. As the poet Tennyson described God, "Closer is he than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet."

Having accepted God as our pilot, we will let our ship of life go whither God directs. Upon new attitude must follow new action. It is in the doing of God's will that we find assurance of God's presence. With new action come new relationships--and new sufferings! We will be taking care of duties and of persons formerly ignored or neglected. We will be making amends to those we hurt. And we now will receive new hurts and bear them without resentment for Christ's sake.

No one can foretell our new life, but in it all God will prove himself very near. (1939)

Written by Michael Tessman,

Your anniversary compilations are generally wonderful and much enjoyed, but today's is a PRIZE! To think that such pithy wisdom was penned in 1939! And, so true for today. Bravo! Blessings!

Written by Sam Dowding,

Even as he wrote nearly 2 decades before I was born, the writer manages to speak directly to me! From my prayers, I must accept that my own changed attitude has to be the first result. Then, as I seek to know God's will, I must go where He directs! VERY illuminating wisdom! It could not be said better than it was in the reading.
