Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 123. So our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he show us his mercy.
The psalmist is suffering at the hands of deceitful and despicable enemies. We have all had such experiences. But the psalmist is not fighting the battle. He is simply waiting, waiting for God’s mercy.
There have been many times when I have been at odds with others, either through personality clashes or actual mistakes and misdeeds committed between us. Try as I might to seek reconciliation, sometimes the tensions remain and even grow. But I have found that if we long for mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation, they will arrive. In time, God will move our lives and those of our enemies to intersect in grace.
Perhaps it is a tragedy that allows us to share God’s love and hope. Perhaps it is a need that I can fill or a ministry only my enemy can offer. Sometimes, despite how deeply we want God’s mercy, we must wait for it. We must wait for God’s hand to move, and it will. If we desire the mercy of God for ourselves and for others, we may have to wait for it but it will come. It will come in God’s perfect time.
