TUESDAY, March 1

Deuteronomy 4:15-24. I am going to die in this land without crossing over the Jordan, but you are going to cross over to take possession of that good land. So be careful not to forget the covenant that the Lord your God made with you.

These words were spoken by Moses toward the end of the Israelites’ forty years in the wilderness. Through good times and bad, Moses had led them. Often stubborn and fickle, the Israelites had provoked Moses to near despair, but still he led them. Moses was not without fault—that is why he was denied entrance into “that good land” and was permitted only to view it from a distance (Numbers 20:11-12; Deuteronomy 4:21-22; 32:48-52)—but he obeyed the Lord God and was content at the last merely to gaze upon the promised land.

Many people approaching old age can identify with Moses. I want to say to my children something like what Moses said: “You will soon be continuing your way without me. Were I to remain here forever, I might become a burden to you or stand in the way of your assuming the responsibilities that are rightfully yours. So carry on what we have begun together. I shall always love you, and I shall pray for you wherever I am. Remember me, but most of all, remember the covenant the Lord your God made with you.”

Written by E. Linda Cushner,

Oh how very true this is. I also want to say that to my children. Although I feel very good physically, I know that the Lord could call me home at any minute. I hope that all the prayers that I have said for my children will be answered and that they will be able to say those words to the next generation.

Written by Michael Armstrong,

A perfect sentiment; I hope I have a chance to say that to my children and grandchildren before I go.
