TUESDAY, March 16

Mark 8:1-10. He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven."...[The people] ate and were filled....Now there were about four thousand people.

Do you have questions? I do.

I think it's a long stretch of the imagination, seven loaves of bread feeding four thousand people. Then again, so was spitting in a deaf man's ear and restoring his hearing. Assuming that the little girl was dead and not asleep, so was her miraculous recovery. Exorcising the neighborhood lunatic and placing his demons inside a herd of pigs, then driving them over a cliff. It gets pretty far-fetched.

Just about the time I want to give up on miracles as literal history, I think about all the sighted and hearing people I know who were once blind and deaf, who now see and hear with exhilarating clarity. Many of us were dead in a myriad of ways and are oh-so-much alive today.

Seven loaves. Four thousand satisfied stomachs. Is it a literal transcription of that afternoon, or some sort of symbolic parable? Actually, either way works for me. Sometimes I can say I believe and know why, and other times I can say I believe and still have questions.

Bottom line? I believe in miracles. That in itself is a miracle. (1998)

I see and believe in the miracles by looking back from the resurrection

Mar 16, 2010 at 9:06 am

Written by Lorrie Robinson,

The stories are fantastic and unbelievable in human experience and terms. Yes, they do work as symbolic parables but they are not really presented as merely symbolic stories. It is only in light of the resurrection of Jesus that we have affirmation of what these stories tell. When God was on the planet in human form, He healed and performed other miracles while here because of who He is. I was reading a devotional based on Paul's comments in 2Cor 4:16-18 about focusing not on what is seen but what is unseen for what is unseen is eternal. Paul and the original Apostles did not put their lives on the line because of powerful stories with wisdom in them. They were witnesses to the Risen Lord. That changes everything...

I agree with Lorrie. I see and believe in miracles by looking at the creation of the universe. The more I study science and math, the more I believe in miracles.

Written by Victoria,

Just this morning i met up with an acquaintance of mine who told me about the day she was prepped for surgery to remove a tumor in her brain (she had been off work for about three months and had done numerous tests including (mri)s. confirming the tumor). A bevy of doctors were ready and when they checked the final mri, there was no tumor. She is totally well and giving thanks to God for something to which there is no explanation..except her miracle. There will always be some literal miracles as well.
I believe in miracles no matter how they appear.
