TUESDAY, November 16 (Margaret of Scotland)

Luke 17:1-10. When you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless servants; we have done only what we ought to have done!”

The analogy that comes to mind is parenthood. Some parents live through their children. Hungry for applause themselves, they push their children into applause-producing situations.

But isn’t the essence of parenthood found in the  2 a.m. feeding? No applause there, just a duty that goes with the role. When the baby grows up and becomes an applause-producer, some parents may consider the acclaim their reward. But I wonder if the real reward wasn’t experienced years before at 2 a.m.

That reward was the wholeness that comes from living the moment fully and authentically.

Life brings duties. Our roles bring duties. Some are pleasant; some aren’t. We can’t pick only the pleasant  and ignore the rest. Bedtime story-reading may feel  cozy, but 2 a.m. feedings are just as necessary for life. Living as a Christian isn’t all 2 a.m. feedings, but it  does have some of those no-applause moments. I think those no-applause moments give Christian living its flavor. When I give in order to get, my giving means little. But when I give selflessly, I live into my calling and thereby honor the one who called me. (1986)

Praise to God Alone

Nov 16, 2010 at 7:37 am

Written by Stephen,

I love this meditation. I do feel we need encouragement especially those early in the growth of their faith. We are a culture that likes the slap on the back. In the midst of Katrina a lot of glad handing and back slapping was going on while people died in the streets and the chaos was growing. The same happened in Iraq (Mission Accomplished). We all have to listen to an ex-presidents sentimental stories while Christians are wiped out in Iraq because of his policies. And this is only one example of the arrogance of servants that are more concerned with accolades than moral service. All those who work to rebuild families and communities after our destructive policies go unnoticed. God Bless Them!
Thanks.

Thank you for this beautiful lesson. I had forgotten about those 2 A.M. feedings. My kids are 47 and 44 now.

Yes, the 2 am feedings didn't seem so much like an opportunity for personal and spiritual growth at the time, but in retrospect (kids 14 and 19), I guess they were!

Written by Sam Dowding,

Not to diminish the significance (or memory!) of the 2 am feedings, but I was struck by the last 2 sentences of the meditation: "When I give in order to get, my giving means little. But when I give selflessly, I live into my calling and thereby honor the one who called me." I was reminded of this sentence from the Nov 8 meditation: "Jesus seems to be saying that we can limit what we get in life by going for the consolation prize rather than the fuller life that God has to offer." They reinforce a new attitude to giving that I am striving to adopt and live into today.
