Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Revelation 21:1-8. I saw a new heaven and a new earth.
Saint John the Divine's spiritual vision of "a new earth" has particular resonance for us today. The world we face has been forever changed by economic corruption and crises, wars, anxiety, and fear. There is, as I write this a year before you read it, daily trepidation about some new "revelation" of malfeasance that threatens our well-being. Some ask if this is the beginning of the Apocalypse. The short answer is no.
To be sure, the world is changing, as is our place in it. My hope is that by the time you read this we will have turned a corner on the uncertainty that stalks us now. But if we have not, what do we do then?
As people of faith we will continue on. We will put our faith in God, rather than in financiers. We will build up treasure in heaven, rather than on earth. We will heed Jesus' words, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed...nothing will be impossible for you." We will learn that anything we may have lost is insignificant compared to what we have: hope.
Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties.
