TUESDAY, November 23 (Clement)

Luke 18:31-43. Then the blind man shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet.

This blind man, perhaps to be identified with Bartimaeus in Mark 10, wanted to see, more than anything in the world. When Jesus the wonder-worker came along, he was ready. He set up such a clamor that his friends tried to hush him, but that only made him call more loudly, trying to attract Jesus’ attention.

How often when we want something are we willing  to make noises about it, roll up our sleeves and take action? Surely if all the people who claim to want world peace, an end to hunger, or justice for the oppressed were willing to shout to get attention and then act by approaching those whose help they need, more would be accomplished.

“God helps those who help themselves” may be a cynical assessment of God’s power and desire to act in our lives, but there’s truth in those words. If we sit quietly and refuse to call on God or move toward him as the source of our help and strength, we will never be helped. The power is there. How long will it take us to decide to use it? (1988)

Written by Andrea,

Another way to look at this story is to recognize that Jesus asked the blind man what he wanted. That may strike some of us as odd - he's BLIND, right? He wants his sight! We assume we know what people want and need. Jesus didn't assume, he asked. This reminds me that when I see a need in the community, before starting a ministry to address it, I should ASK those in need what they see as being most necessary, helpful, useful, etc. That helps keep ministry from being something done TO them and makes it something done WITH them.

Written by Mary Kier,

I remember a book I had as a child. Allthough my memory is vague now, The theme was Jesus comes to my house. I remember how comforting that was. In light of today's meditation if we ask God to come into our house or our lives he is right there! We may not know it or if going through a very rough time see it, but the Holy Spirit, once asked and invited in is "in our house" sharing our lives with us. Just ask!
This may seem trivial but when ever I have lost something important instead of panicking I ask God's help. Bingo there it is! Try it sometime-- !!

Written by Kristen,

From the mouths of babes. . .

My four year old has a horrible cough and we decided to stay home from church last Sunday. When he asked if he could wear a vest to church, and when I told him we were staying home so he could feel better, his reply?

"But Mommy, I HAVE to go to church, God NEEDS me!"

Amazing that a four year old feels "called by name". . .
