Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 18:31-43. Then the blind man shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet.
This blind man, perhaps to be identified with Bartimaeus in Mark 10, wanted to see, more than anything in the world. When Jesus the wonder-worker came along, he was ready. He set up such a clamor that his friends tried to hush him, but that only made him call more loudly, trying to attract Jesus’ attention.
How often when we want something are we willing to make noises about it, roll up our sleeves and take action? Surely if all the people who claim to want world peace, an end to hunger, or justice for the oppressed were willing to shout to get attention and then act by approaching those whose help they need, more would be accomplished.
“God helps those who help themselves” may be a cynical assessment of God’s power and desire to act in our lives, but there’s truth in those words. If we sit quietly and refuse to call on God or move toward him as the source of our help and strength, we will never be helped. The power is there. How long will it take us to decide to use it?
