Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 5. All who take refuge in you will be glad; they will sing out their joy for ever....For you, O LORD, will bless the righteous; you will defend them with your favor as with a shield.
In ninth grade, I studied electrical circuits, parallel and serial. Though I never understood it, I have often used devices with both types of circuits. My failure to explain the power didn't prevent my using it.
I need not understand how everything works to make the best advantage of those things. In spiritual matters the same rule applies. Though I will never understand the boundless mercy of God, I know that I am saved by that mercy.
Trusting in God to know God's business allows me, also, to hope that others who do not embrace my religious beliefs or tradition may be saved by the grace of God. Karl Rahner called this principle the "anonymous Christian." In it, the power and presence of Christ--the logos--may animate, save, or sanctify a person even though the name of Christ remains unknown to that person. Sadly, we often forget that the power is not ours, but God's. And a human being isn't prevented from using that power simply by being unable to explain it.
