Matthew 13:1-9. Let anyone with ears listen!

Some of my most satisfying moments as a parent are when one of our daughters, now adults, calls us and laments that she should have listened to my wife and me while she was growing up. She will say it would have saved her in so many ways and she is now paying the price of having not heeded our advice.

Of course, those satisfying moments last only a short time because our daughter would not have made that confession had she not been hurting in some way. The moment is further shortened by the knowledge that I am just like my daughters. I did not always listen to my parents, much to my later chagrin.

Don’t we all have ears? Don’t we all listen? Do we truly listen to what Jesus tells us? Obviously not. We don’t listen because we don’t want to hear what is being said. We don’t want to do what we are told we must do. And even when we do listen and do hear what is being said, we find an excuse to ignore him.

The saving grace is that sometimes, like my daughter, we eventually come to our senses. May we come to them sooner rather than later.

The Gifts of Hearing and Listening

Oct 25, 2011 at 6:20 am

Written by emeline,

All my life I have had a hearing impairment, what one calls "hard of hearing." In my younger days I viewed it as an impediment. As I matured, I began to understand that this "impediment" was a blessing for me. WHY? It taught me to listen carefully to what was being said and it helped me along with my journey, both spiritual and secular. It is amazing that the very persons who made fun of me and called me ill names because of my hearing loss, are the very ones who now hold me in high esteem because of my successes in life. You see, while they were busy making fun of me, I was busy, with the encourgement of my dear departed parents and oldest sister, listening to the instructions and advice at school and Sunday School. Listening is a skill we all need to learn. It sets the way forward for our journeys through life. Oh, if only more people would listen to HIS voice!

Written by Bonnie,

Yes, thank you, Emeline. If only we would all listen in order to truly hear.
Forgive them

Emeline, forgive them, for they were kids whose parents did not teach them to listen, nor to not mock, nor the meaning of grace. Plain and simple: you were blessed with your hearing deficit and your asset parents.
Much Appreciated!

Linda, Bonnie and Irma, thanks for the encouraging sentiments. I am happy that there are people, like yourselves, in other parts of the world who have compassion and love. Let us all continue to listen to HIS VOICE!
