TUESDAY, October 26 (Alfred the Great)

Psalm 48. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; in the city of our God is his holy hill.

In every land there are holy places, places of pilgrimage, places which people have visited to encounter God. It is part of our religious instinct to set places aside for God. There are dangers in this—people can assume that God shuns the other parts, outside the shrines. But there are elements of truth too. We need to be reminded. We aren’t always aware of holy things. We forget God, or take God for granted. Or, like fools, we say, “How shall God perceive it; is there knowledge in the Most High?” No, we need to be reminded. So we have shrines, churches, crucifixes. They bring certain facts to mind.

To the Jew who first sang this psalm, the holy hill was where God dwelt. For me it may be the spire of some village church which for centuries has pointed its finger to the heavens. I shall never forget standing outside the Kremlin in Moscow, with the tower near the gate surmounted by the hammer and sickle that could be lit up at night. Beside it and above it, in inexorable courage, towered the spires of the churches with their crosses on top, dominating the city and pointing a reminder to all who saw with eyes to see that this God is our God for ever and ever. (1967)

Where God Is

Oct 26, 2010 at 7:25 am

Written by Stephen,

We like to put God where we want God. Some draw a line between the sacred and the secular. For the sake of the citizenry this is very good. For the sake of my faith it is wrong headed. As a citizen of the City of God I must carry my faith wherever I go because to God there are no boundaries only the limits of my own imagination. I hope we don't continue to mistake our political beliefs with our religious ones, but instead be empowered by God to do what is best for the common good. We can't put God anywhere or take God away from anywhere, but we can let God put us in service to others to the best of our abilities.

Maybe I'M a fool, but I don't understand why the questions the author cites are foolish questions. We are mere humans.
The sacred in everything

Oct 26, 2010 at 10:40 am

Written by Tom P,

If indeed there is a creator deity, he/she/they/it must certainly be in everything or nothing at all. We choose to exploit and abuse the rest of this creation. Is that the result of "free will" that we were "bestowed" with? Is that part of some grand plan or divine design? The interventionist God of the Old Testament seems strangely quiet these days. When good things happen we thank God but when bad things happen, who do we blame?
