TUESDAY, October 6 (William Tyndale)

2 Kings 22:1-13. [King Josiah said,] "But they need not account for the money entrusted to them, because they are acting faithfully." (NIV)

"Only the hand that erases can write the true thing," wrote Meister Eckhart. Trusting in God means that we have an "eraser" for mistakes--our own and those of others.

King Josiah believed in honoring God above all; he placed faithfulness to God above all earthly priorities. So he could let go of anxiety about the rebuilding of the temple, knowing God could erase all human failing and "write the true thing."

In the open space where God has erased my mistakes, I can live into the person God made me to be. Knowledge of the grace of God means my mistakes cannot destroy me because God forgives me. Others' mistakes cannot hurt me because God's hand erases my need to win over others or hold onto their failings as evidence of my worth. The world no longer controls me if I "act faithfully" and trust in God above all.

The temple--the space honoring God in this world--will be built in spite of all human failing. By God's hand, any mistake can be erased. By God's hand, the true thing for each human heart will be written.

Written by Mary Starr Smith,

Thank you for this comforting start to the workday by your reflection: if I honor God by honest work, my best effort is acceptable to God. Faithfulness to God builds a sanctuary for the soul in even and especially in less than perfect circumstances.

Written by Karen Stewart,

I've been reading Forward Day by Day for 5 years now. I find so much in the reflections that I feel God is speaking to me directly through these authors and today is a perfect example! It is so comforting to know that my faith in God will sustain me, erase my mistakes, and forgive me.

Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard

Written by Chris,

Thanks for this reflection. Now I am wondering how this line from Kings may connect to the parable of the laborers in the vineyard and the different kind of justice it creates.
