1 Corinthians 1:20-31. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
Philosophy and debate were the cultural heritage of the new Christians in ancient Corinth. The teachings of Plato, Aristotle, and other notable Greeks still enrich human thought today.
Members of the Corinthian church began to be loyal to different teachers and leaders. They became divided and combative among themselves. St. Paul was concerned about this division and wrote to them about it. The church has not changed much.
Thoughtful debate can be useful, but arguing does not enrich life, especially when the goal is to win at any cost. This can become tragic. War is the worst example.
Paul urged the Corinthians to be united and loyal only to Christ. This meant surrendering personal opinions about some things. It meant living by faith in Christ and loving others even when the Corinthians did not understand or agree with one another.
This foolishness is still God’s wisdom for today’s church and today’s world, beginning with you and me.
