TUESDAY, September 15

Matthew 4:12-17. The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.

Yesterday, Holy Cross Day, we reflected on John's "children of light." Today we read Matthew, and the theme of light continues. The light is, of course, Jesus.

In the television show Ghost Whisperer, Melinda can see souls who have died but for various reasons have not "passed on" into God's nearer presence. She helps them deal with whatever issues are blocking them from crossing over. When these are settled, they are shown walking toward the light.

Much has been written about near-death experiences. There is always a report of an experience of light. I like this because light has always been closely associated with Christ. It gives me great comfort to believe that when I die, it will be to Jesus that I go.

But light is not just a phenomenon for those who die. Because I am baptized, I am bathed in light today while still on earth. And because of that, I do not mind the moments of darkness that come my way, for I know that in the morning, there will always be the light.
