WEDNESDAY, April 27 Wednesday in Easter Week

Acts 3:1-10. But Peter said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk.”

Having spent a life begging by the temple gate, it was no surprise that the beggar was ill-suited to step right in and assume a normal life, complete with vocational and fiscal responsibilities. Sure, it was miraculous that he could now walk. But what then?

It would not be a stretch to imagine him returning to begging, maybe even “developing” symptoms of lameness again and truly believing he had gone lame. He would suspect it was his lack of faith that caused his relapse. After all, the guys who were healing in the name of Jesus left no room for other opinions. Turn on any TV evangelist and you’ll hear that if it doesn’t work, it’s your lack of faith.

Perhaps the more powerful story would be that Peter found him affordable housing and got him enrolled in vocational training and counseling. After all, a life on the streets is traumatic at best, and we’re still learning how deeply trauma affects us. And several years later, we’d like to hear, he was helping homeless people get on their feet!

Written by Paulletta Garoutte-Aldridge,

I want to believe that the change in the beggar was complete but I wonder too... All I know for sure is that Peter did what God wanted him to do for others and that is the true message..we do what we do for Christ and try very hard to follow his will...what others do with the message, their "new legs" is between them and God...we can support them and help but the ultimate life decisions are their's and their's alone...we can not choose God and change for them...

I wonder too. This is a very thoughtful meditation. This is radical thinking.

Written by Andrea,

Paulletta, while it's true that salvation and transformation are deeply personal, I think Bo's meditation hints at how it's not just between between an individual and his or her God. We're all in this together, or we should be. We are the body of Christ in the world. And sometimes just bringing the message is not enough. We need to support each other and address structural inequities that prevent some people from living into their God-given gifts.

Bo, appreciate the meditation very much, as I have all of yours this month!

Radical becomes sacrilege if one is not careful. Think about it!
Not Jesus

Apr 27, 2011 at 8:51 am

Written by Bo Cox,

All great world-changing ideas began as sacrilege: Jesus's social gospel in a religious system that definitely thought they had a corner on the right/wrong, clean/unclean market; or Copernicus coming to show the western world (the church-influenced western world) that the earth actually revolved around the sun (something eastern scholars had known for centuries) and being declared a heretic by the church. The list is long and the message is this:Don't be afraid to think outside the established box.

Written by Steve Doutt,

You are correct Esther. Jesus was crucified for sacrilege and blasphemy.
completely backwards

Written by Gayle Heatherington,

This is my first Day by Day. I am surprised that the meditation seems to be the reverse of the point of the scripture. "Affordable housing and rehab" are exactly what Peter says he is NOT offering. No "silver and gold." What he is offering is more precious: salvation through Jesus. This meditation even dares to say "a more powerful story would be..." Clearly the writer does not believe that the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and feels he/she can do a better job! I'll wait to see what tomorrow's Day by Day says.
Whose story is it?

Written by Jann Coulson,

I believe it is dangerous to interpret scripture in light of our own agenda instead of seeking support for a position. That seems to have happened here. Heather, I am often fed spiritually here. Don't give up, but it may take 6 weeks to get a different perspective.
Council of Nicea, Constantine and agendas

Apr 27, 2011 at 11:26 am

Written by Bo Cox,

The history of the Bible is all about an agenda to support a position. Check out the Council of Nicea and the Roman Emperor Constantine and the metamorphis of both the Bible and Christianity. Understanding the Bible with some accompanying understanding of history helps me to dig a little deeper. Some people not so much.
Also, "silver and gold" are handouts, "affordable housing, vocational training and counseling" are hands ups; not comparable.
My grandpa used to say, "it takes all kinds." I think he was pretty wise.

Another very powerful and thought-provoking meditation. I am very thankful for these incredible devotions over the past couple of weeks from the current writer.
