WEDNESDAY, August 3

Psalm 119:97-120. Oh, how I love your law! all the day long it is in my mind.

In our friary, we read parts of Psalm 119 every day at midday prayer, covering the entire 176 verses in one week. It’s a remarkable psalm. It has been called a love song, not one of youthful passion, but of sustained reflection on God’s law, which has become for the psalmist as familiar as a lifelong partner. The psalmist delights in naming God’s “law,” “precepts,” “commandments,” “decrees,” “statutes,” “way,” “promise,” “word,” “ordinances,” and so on in a kaleidoscope of variations on a theme.

It’s also a very personal psalm. Nearly every verse has personal pronouns such as “I,” “my,” or “your.” God is not an abstract being, only approachable indirectly. God can be addressed and known personally.

This “law of God” is not the legalism condemned by Jesus, but an encounter with the living God. “Law” (Torah) is not an endless series of regulations to be obeyed but an invitation to follow God on the way. It is a way of life, the way of love.

There is no fulfillment of the law apart from communion with God, and no communion with God apart from fulfillment of the law.

Written by Mo Ped,

Thank you for your gracious words on the Torah. Too often we, as Christians, buy into the biases written into the early Christian works by writers reacting to the Jewish community's rejection of Jesus as the Messiah. The Torah is not a meaningless set of laws of regulations meant to make people look holy in front of the community. The Torah is, as you say, a way of life. It is a way for people to identify with the One God. I would really love to invite a Jewish rabbi to make a presentation on the Torah to a Bible study and/or adult education group. Thanks again for saying what you said.
thanks

Written by Christopher John SSF,

thanks for your appreciative comment - my reflections were partly on the basis that psalm 119 has been part of daily prayer life for the past 28 years - and to sustain me in that I need to look beyond "law" as just "do that" or "don't do this" - it's really a gracious invitation to enter the way of life.
