Mark 15:1-11. Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.
It is fascinating today to see how a common theme coincidentally emerges from all the readings. Wisdom and the Word. Solomon dazzles the visiting queen of Sheba with his words of earthly wisdom and the trappings of success. Jesus before Pilate is mute. He who is the Word of God is silent before him whose words are those of secular power and authority. Solomon and his admirers almost make an idol of his wisdom; it is a wisdom measured in gold and precious spices. Jesus, who is the Wisdom of God, points not to himself, but to the Father; he speaks no word, but in that silence the Word speaks through the universe.
James writes of the power of the tongue, the need for wisdom in taming it, and the destructive effect of words that hurt and damage.
Psalm 119 is a prolonged reflection on the wisdom of God’s way as expressed in statutes, ordinances, decrees, and precepts, “because I trust in your words.” Psalm 38 speaks of the penitent sufferer “from whose mouth comes no defense.”
As we reflect on the word of God in scripture, may the Word and Wisdom of God, the very presence of God, penetrate our hearts and lives.
