Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
John 1:29-42. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus.
If Jesus came along, what would you do? Would you ask favors of him, blow your own horn, flatter him? Or would you find your brother and bring him to Jesus?
Whatever Andrew might have done, his greatness lay in what he did do. He went and found his brother and brought him to Jesus.
The experience of centuries of growth of the church has confirmed the fact that while services, evangelistic meetings, broadcasts, and innumerable other things may convert people to Christ, no outreach can take the place of Andrew’s method of the personal invitation.
How different Christian history would have been had Andrew not brought Peter to Jesus! No matter what else Andrew did in his whole life, the most valuable contribution he made to Christianity was to find his brother.
It is easy to speak to someone you scarcely know, but difficult to talk to those who are most aware of your own failings. But you aren’t failing here if you bring another to the One who never fails. Have I ever won anyone for Jesus? How hard have I tried? (1943)
